Apprenticeships

Introduction

As part of Sheffield City Council’s commitment to recruiting young people into its workforce, the Council offers Apprenticeships in a variety of vocational area’s including; Administration, IT Technicians, Customer Service, Childcare, Health and Social Care, Catering, Construction, Horticulture and Painting and Decorating.  Adult Apprenticeships (for people aged 25 and over) are also available in Construction.

Who can apply for an Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are available to all young people aged between 16-24.  However particular focus is placed on recruiting young people from groups that are underrepresented in the City Council’s workforce. This is one of the many ways that the Council takes positive steps to ensure that its workforce is reflective of the community as a whole.

Apprenticeships last for between one and two years dependant on the content of the specific qualification (known as an Apprenticeship framework) and the young person.  All frameworks include a National Vocational Qualification, a technical certificate and a key skills qualification as a minimum.  All Apprentices are allocated an assessor who supports them through the apprenticeship process, both in the workplace and on their day release training within the Council’s training centres.

An Apprenticeship pay structure has been developed and agreed with the City Council and local trades unions, in line with government guidelines.  The department employing the Apprentice pays the Apprentice’s salary, while funding for the training is accessed by the Lifelong Learning and Skills Service from the local Learning and Skills Council.

Recruitment

  • A council department identifies a specific vacancy and reserves it for an Apprentice
  • A council department creates an apprenticeship post that is additional to its existing staffing

In addition existing staff may participate in the Apprenticeship Programme, by participating in the training and gaining the framework qualification.

All young people that are recruited onto the Apprenticeship Programme undergo a preliminary assessment to ensure that they will be able to meet the training and employment requirements of the City Council.  Apprentices are selected by the interview by the department offering the vacancy.
