Adult Community and Family Learning
Adult and Community and Family Learning activities are provided by the Lifelong Learning and Skills Service.
The Service’s mission with regard to Adult and Community Learning is:
To contribute to social inclusion and economic regeneration in Sheffield by securing lifelong learning and employment opportunities in response to the needs and aspirations of young people, adults, employers and communities.
To do this by supporting innovation, diversity and excellence of provision, creating effective partnerships and by driving up participation, attainment and progression at all ages.
The Service delivers a wide range of first rung learning opportunities for adults including a significant programme of family learning, drawing its resources from LSC, ESF, Neighbourhood Learning in Deprived Communities Fund and the Neighbourhood Renewal Fund. The Service targets its work and resources on areas of the city experiencing social and economic deprivation and where the local adult learning infrastructure is relatively weak.
A further important dimension of the work of the Service is the development and coordination of local learning forums or partnerships, which act as a focus for the strategic planning, and coordination of adult learning, skills and increasingly employment at a neighbourhood level. The Service also plays a key role in the development and delivery of the city’s adult learning strategy, launched by Sheffield First in May 2004.
Effective partnerships with other organisations and groups, e.g. local community forums, voluntary and faith groups, the Sheffield College, Longley Park College, Northern College, WEA, the local strategic partnership and the Learning & Skills Council - South Yorkshire, are key to the success of the Service’s work with respect to Adult, Community and Family Learning.
