New and additional training courses are put on throughout the year according to demand.
Details of new courses are sent out to all Governors by email and with the agenda packs for termly Governing Body meetings. A Termly Training Update is available to download from the bottom of this page.
[N.B. Governors are asked to please be aware that notice of additional courses may be very short. This is usually due to the last minute release of places on training courses organised by individual schools where the session has been under subscribed. The Governor Support Team endeavours to let Governors know of these courses as soon as possible]
Safer Recruitment Training
At least one Governor per school is expected to complete accredited Safer Recruitment training in addition to the Headteacher. This can be done either online through the National College for School Leadership (NCSL), or through the courses provided by the Learning and Development Department of Children and Young People's Directorate Organisational Development, details of which can be downloaded at the bottom of the page.
Please note that the courses run by the Learning and Development Department are not included in the subscription to the Governor Training Package and the fee to schools is £100 per Governor. Please check with your Chair of Governors or Training Co-ordinator Governor before booking on, and contact Kirsty Surtees for further details on (0114) 2930924 or by email kirsty.surtees@sheffield.gov.uk.

If there are fewer than the required number of applicants, courses will be cancelled. If this happens we try to offer an alternative, or where possible, we send out the materials to applicants.

Governors’ Expenses for Training
Governing Bodies should have a policy to cover expenses. You may be able to claim for childcare, other carer expenses and travel. Contact the Chair of your Governing Body for details.
Annual Review
We recommend that Governing Bodies undertake a regular self review using the framework included in the Sheffield Governor Newsletter in the Summer Term each year.
The Training Co-ordinator Governor
Each Governing Body is required to nominate a Governor to take on the role of the Training Co-ordinator Governor, in order to ensure Governing Body training and development takes place.
Please Contact the Governor Support Team for any further information or assistance.
