Executive Director's Briefing 10 June 2008
Community Cohesion
An overview from Mike Killingley,
Chair of Sheffield Association of School Governors (SASGB)
Perhaps you had wondered if Community Cohesion was really new rather than a new phrase to describe activities schools have been involved in for some time – this evening was a chance to find out, as well as to consider the implications for Governing Bodies.
Paul Makin, Acting Executive Director, gave us these observations about Community Cohesion:
- It is about more than race and culture;
- It is about providing equality of opportunity for all young people to achieve excellence;
- It should lead to increased integration between communities, for example through school twinning;
- It can promote inter-generational activity;
- It should lead Governing Bodies to consider how representative they are of both the student body and local community.
Paul ended by commenting on the role of schools in promoting common values.
Beth Stevenson, Headteacher at Springfield School then gave an inspirational insight into the challenges and opportunities presented at this inner city junior school. She highlighted the outstanding features of their work which promote community cohesion.
At the end of the evening Governors present reflected that Community Cohesion is not new but describes a key area of work that schools have already been engaged in. The challenge is how we further enhance our impact and effectiveness.
