Extended Schools

The Extended Schools Core Offer

Under the Extended Schools initiative all schools are expected to offer the following by 2010.  It is stressed however that the services do not have to be on the school premises, or provided directly by the school.

  • High-quality 8 a.m. - 6.00 p.m. childcare provided on the school site or through other local providers

  • A varied menu of activities including study support for example, homework clubs, arts and crafts, business activities

  • Parenting support - including information sessions and family learning activities

  • Swift and easy referral to a wide range of specialist support services

  • Wider community access to school facilities, such as sports, ICT and adult learning

Extended Services at the Heart of School Improvement

The Annual Conference for Governors in September 2007 focused on issues surrounding Extended Services, with Julian Piper, National Director Extended Schools Support Service, as the keynote speaker.

Extended Services Toolkit and Guidance on Governance

The Extended Services Toolkit for Governors was published on 21 May 2007.  It has been designed by the Training and Development Agency for Schools (TDA), in conjunction with national governor organisations and partners, to help Governing Bodies deepen their understanding and skills around Extended Services and better equip them to support schools.

The Toolkit was released along with guidance on Governance of Sure Start Children's Centres and Extended Schools and can be used as a checklist or self-evaluation framework by schools already providing the extended services core offer in full and by those developing their extended services.  For schools starting out, it can be used to kick-start the process and connect the school to the local authority extended services roll-out programme.

Hard copies of the Extended Services Toolkit are available from Orbital Publications.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) sent one hard copy of the Governance Guidance and the Toolkit to all Chairs of Governors in Summer 2007.  In June 2007, the DCSF also published Extended Schools: Building on Experience which can be downloaded from the Online Publications section of the Teachernet website .

Adding Value - Adult Learning and Extended Services

Adding Value is a free publication from the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) funded by the Local Government Association.  It aims to explore the role of Adult Learning in the development of Extended Services and to show how it can support the other services that schools are developing with their communities.

Adding Value is aimed firstly at managers and coordinators supporting the development of Extended Services.  Managers and coordinators in adult learning and family learning services who wish to work in partnership with schools will also find the publication useful, as will local authority officers supporting the development of extended services in the community.   Adding Value includes a number of in-depth case studies.
