The Governor Training Programme is sent to all Governors early in the Autumn Term, and to new Governors with their Welcome Pack.  Course details can also be accessed by selecting from the list below:

Please note at least one Governor per school is expected to complete Safer Recruitment online training.

If you would like more details about course content please contact:

Briefings and Forums for Governors

Each term there is an opportunity to hear about local and national initiatives via the
SEN Governors’ Forum and the Executive Director of Children and Young People's Services Briefing, organised in partnership with the Sheffield Association of School Governing Bodies (SASGB).  The Governor Forums are free of charge.  Please contact the Governor Support Team to reserve a place.

Making a Course Booking

To book onto a course or reserve a place at a briefing telephone (0114) 2506887
or e-mail: cypd-govtraining@sheffield.gov.uk.  Please also let us know if you need to cancel a booking.

Costs of Courses

Every Spring Term each Governing Body decides what services they wish to buy from the Governor Support Team.  If you are unsure about whether your Governing Body has bought into the Training Package, contact your Training Co-ordinator Governor or Chair of Governors.

All fees are paid by the school and not by individual Governors.

Cancelling a Course

Courses usually need a minimum of six participants in order to run, and ten for Induction Courses.  If you need to cancel your booking, please let us know as soon as possible.

If there are fewer than the required number of applicants, courses will be cancelled.  If this happens we try to offer an alternative, or where possible, we send out the materials to applicants.

Very occasionally, we have to cancel a course at short notice because of staff illness or bad weather.  We do not take this decision lightly and will rearrange the course as soon as possible.

Course Venues

The Quaker Meeting House, St James’ Street, Sheffield S1 2EW is fully accessible on all floors.  A hearing loop is available by asking at reception or by telephoning the Governor Support Team in advance.  There is limited parking outside and the venue is easily accessible by tram and bus.

The Salvation Army Centre, Psalter Lane, Sheffield S11 8YN, is fully accessible on all floors.  There is a car park adjacent to the building (the entrance is on Sharrow Vale Road).

The Bannerdale Centre, 125 Carterknowle Road, Sheffield S7 2EX is accessible to wheelchair users via the rear of the building.  There is a large car park next to the building.  View or download a map of the Bannerdale Centre from the bottom of the Contact the Governor Support Team page.

Occasionally we may use other venues for courses.  We only use venues which meet the Council's accessibility standards, but please tell us if you have particular requirements when you book a place on a course.

Governors’ Expenses for Training

Governing Bodies should have a policy to cover expenses.  You may be able to claim for childcare, other carer expenses and travel.  The Governor Support Team can offer some support towards these expenses on a first come first-served basis.  Please contact us if you need help.

The Training Co-ordinator Governor

Each Governing Body is required to nominate a Governor to take on the role of Training
Co-ordinator, in order to ensure Governing Body training and development takes place.
