Pay and Grading Review
The City Council is currently undertaking a review of the pay and grading of Local Government Service employees, which includes school support staff. Headteachers have been briefed on developments and Governor briefings will take place during the summer term 2008. New Anti-Bullying Guidance
Revised Guidance issued in the Autumn Term 2007 on combating bullying in schools can be downloaded from the Teachernet website on the following subjects:

Community Cohesion Conference
The Education and Inspections Act 2006 introduced a duty on all maintained schools in England to promote community cohesion, and on Ofsted to report on the contributions made in this area.
The duty on schools came into effect on 1 September 2007 and the duty on Ofsted will commence in September 2008. It applies to all schools, regardless of their status and pupil make-up.
To help schools make this guidance a reality, the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF) is supporting nine free regional conferences for Headteachers and Governors of primary and secondary schools. Sheffield Governors were well represented at the Yorkshire and Humberside conference in York on 18 January 2008.

National Year of Reading 2008
The Rt Hon Ed Balls MP, Secretary of State for the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF), launched the National Year of Reading 2008 with the following statement:
"The 2008 National Year of Reading will create a powerful focus ofopportunities and activities so that children, families and adult learnersunderstand the benefits that reading for pleasure and purpose canbring to change their lives."

Equality and Human Rights Commission
On 1 October 2007 the three equality commissions merged into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission:
- Commission for Racial Equality (CRE)
- Disability Rights Commission (DRC)
- Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC)
The websites of these commissions have also been incorporated into the new Equality and Human Rights Commission website.
'2020 Vision' - Report on Teaching and Learning in 2020
This report presents a vision for personalising teaching and learning for children and young people aged 5-16. It has drawn upon a wide range of evidence and practice, and makes recommendations about what changes to the school system should be considered in order to make its vision of what schools will look like in 2020 a reality.
The report considers ways to improve and sustain the rate of pupil progress, strategies to enhance teachers’ skills and share best practice, and how to engage pupils and parents in the learning process. This document also looks at ways in which flexibilities in the curriculum might support personalised learning, and how to establish a better system of innovation in teaching and learning in schools.
