Welcoming New Governors
Experienced Governors can easily forget what it was like to be a new Governor and how much they have learnt since. All the more reason then for taking steps to ensure that new Governors get a good induction. This can and should be more than access to formal training. Any established group needs to assist new members to an equal level of understanding and involvement.
The Governor Support Team sends each new Governor a Welcome Pack on appointment which is a selection of reading material chosen for its accessibility. We have also set up a page on this website, I'm a New Governor - What Do I Do?, with guidance and information for new Governors.
An Induction Checklist, which can be downloaded from the bottom of the page, suggests other things which Governing Bodies could include in their own induction arrangements for new members. Your Governing Body may want to do more, for example ensuring opportunities for new members to talk with the Headteacher, Chair and other Governors outside formal meetings and to formally visit the school.
Other useful documents which can be downloaded below are Good Practice when Welcoming New Governors and A Good Team Keeps its Players from the School Governors One Stop Shop website. You can also find out what other schools do by downloading the Policy for the Induction of New Governors from Broomhill Infant School.
