Parental Involvement

The subject of the Annual Governors Conference on 27 September 2008 is
'The Impact of Parental Involvement on Pupil Achievement and the Implications for Governance'.  Please visit the Forthcoming Events for Governors page for further details.

The following Questions Framework could be a useful starting point for Governing Bodies to review or develop their policy on Parental Involvement.

  • Do we have a policy for involving parents in their children’s learning?

  • How is our policy reflected in our Home School Agreement?

  • When did we last review our Home School Agreement?

  • How effectively do we communicate with parents about their children’s learning?

  • Is there potential to run courses/events at school which help parents to support children’s learning?

  • Is there, or could we develop, a space in the school which could be used for family learning and other parental involvment?

  • What plans do we have to develop and promote access for parents and the wider community to opportunities for learning?

  • What other agencies or groups could we work with to develop the support that we offer to parents?

  • Do our practice and plans take into account the needs of specific groups of children and/or parents (e.g. vulnerable groups, English as an Additional Language, Carers of Looked After Children?)

  • How does our staffing structure implementation plan support parental involvement?

  • How do we know what parents think about our efforts to involve them?  How can we find out?
