Black and Minority Ethnic Governors Network
BME Governor Recruitment
Sheffield City Council is placing particular emphasis on supporting the recruitment of BME Governors and aims:
- To be amongst the best Children's Service Authorities in terms of Governing Bodies being representative of their communities
- For all Governors to be confident in their role
- For BME Governors to be fully included in Governing Bodies’ work
- For Race Equality issues to be owned by the whole Governing Body
- To improve the attainment of under-achieving groups of children (including Black and Minority Ethnic children)
Let’s Double our Numbers!
Annual benchmarking shows that Sheffield does well compared to other local authorities in recruiting and retaining Black and Minority Ethnic Governors, but we want to improve.
In December 2007, we launched a campaign to 'Double our Numbers' at an event hosted by Sheffield Hallam University, who work closely with the local authority through their Widening Participation activity.
The strands of this campaign are:
- A challenge to all Governing Bodies to recruit a further BME Governor to their membership (if there are no vacancies then people can be involved as Associate Governors)
- A challenge to current BME Governors to encourage another member of a BME community to take up Governorship
- The Local Authority to actively engage with BME community groups to promote understanding of school governance and to encourage prospective Governors.
- The BME Governors Network to investigate funding or other resourcing to support this work.
BME Governors' Network Meetings
All Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) Governors in Sheffield are invited to come to meetings of the BME Governors' Network which are usually held termly. Events are organised by a planning group of Local Authority officers and Governors.
All known BME Governors will receive an invitation to these meetings.
