Paying Your Council Tax Online
We have teamed up with the Alliance and Leicester to create a safe and secure way for you to pay your Council Tax on-line. The on-line payment system is called BillPayment.

Things you need to know before you start
You will only be allowed to pay your Council Tax by debit card. You can use Switch, Solo, Delta and Visa Electron cards. It is not possible to use a credit card.
The advantage of using our on-line Billpayment is that if you pay your bill today, your Council Tax account will be credited tomorrow. But if you use you own banks on-line credit payment system, pay by standing order, pay at banks or post offices, it will take around 4 working days before the Council receives your payment. The Council will not know that you have paid your Council Tax until it receives your payment and may start recovery action if you have paid later than the due date shown on your bill.
If, for any reason, you pay after the payment due date shown on your bill, you may prefer to pay by debit card over the phone. To pay by telephone you will need to have your debit card and your Council Tax reference number handy, then call (0114) 273 5249. This line is available 24 hours.
Using BillPayment on-line
You do not need to register with BillPayment to make a one-off payment, but by registering you will only need to enter your details once, then each time you use the system you will be able to make your payments quicker.
When you first use BillPayment you will need to:
- choose a password
- think of a security question/answer that you can remember easily
- have your debit card and your Council Tax account number handy
- note your account reference number for EACH bill you want to pay
Registering
If you wish to register with BillPayment you will be asked your name address and contact details, then give a password and security question that are unique to you. (You'll be asked to give your password and answer the security question whenever you log into the payment system in future). Registering is an easy process, just fill in your details in the form which appears when you click to register.
While you're registering you will also need to choose which Council bill you want to pay and give details of your account reference number for EACH bill.
Once you have completed this registration process, you will be issued with a Personal User Number, which when entered with your password, will enable you to enter the BillPay online payment facility 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. You will need to keep a personal record of your user number and password as you will need these each time you make a payment.
The Alliance and Leicester site answers most other questions you may have and will help you to make changes to your security details and can even remind you if you forget your password.
