Paying Your Council Tax Bill

Why must I pay by the due date?

You must be sure that the Council receives your Council Tax payments by the due dates shown on your bill. Sheffield City Council has a duty to collect all amounts of Council Tax due.

Unpaid Council Tax or payments made late are a burden on other local taxpayers and it is only fair that action is taken to collect overdue Council Tax. Please see what happens if you don't pay on time.

Where payments are received late, this means that the City Council must borrow money, and pay interest on it, to pay for the services it provides.

How can I pay my Council Tax?

There are several ways to pay your Council Tax bill and you can choose which way is most convenient for you:

A choice of payment dates is available - either the 1st, 7th, 15th, 23rd or the last day of the month; By using Direct Debit to pay your Council Tax you can choose to extend your payments into February and March. This will reduce your monthly payments.

Paying by Debit Card in person or by telephoning the Automated Telephone Payments system on (0114) 273 5249.

Is there anything else I need to know?

If you decide to pay by armchair banking, by standing order, or if you send a cheque through the post, it will take around 5 working days before the Council receives your payment. The Council will not know that you have paid until it receives your money and may start recovery action if you have paid later than the due date shown on your bill.

If you have forgotten to pay and your due date has passed, please pay immediately by debit card over the phone or by cash or cheque in person.
