Empty Homes

If you own a property that is empty of furniture and no-one lives there, you may be entitled to a temporary exemption of up to six months starting from the day the property first becomes empty. If your property stays empty for more than six months, we will charge you Council Tax.

We will charge you 100% (zero% discount) of the full Council Tax charge, following the six months 'free' exempt period.

If your property is in need of major repair work so that someone can live there, please see my home is uninhabitable.

If you own a property that contains furniture, but it is not lived in, or it is lived in by someone who is charged the full Council Tax charge somewhere else, you will not be allowed the six month 'free' exemption. You will be charged at 90% (10% discount) of the full Council Tax charge. These properties are known as 'Second Homes'.

If you are employed and your contract of employment includes a property where you must live, and one or both properties that you are liable to pay Council Tax for are in the Sheffield area, you may be entitled to a bigger discount. Please contact us at Council Tax for more details.

If you have recently moved home or are about to move please let us know.
