What happens if you don't pay on time?

Your Council Tax bill is normally payable in ten monthly instalments with the last instalment in January. The date by which you must pay each of your instalments (the due date) is shown on your bill, but is usually the 1st of the month.

(You can reduce your monthly payments or choose a more suitable payment date. All we ask is that you pay by Direct Debit)

If you have a change in your circumstances, it may affect the number of instalments you are allowed to pay your bill. For example, if you move home, you will be sent a revised bill for your old address for charges up to the date you left. This is payable in one instalment within 14 days of us issuing your bill.

If your new home is within the Sheffield area, you will receive a new bill for Council Tax from the date you moved in to the end of the financial year (31 March). This bill will be payable by monthly instalments, but the number of instalments you will be allowed will depend on the number of months left in the instalment scheme (up to January).

You must pay your Council Tax on or before the due date shown on your bill. If you do not do so, we will take further recovery action.

You may wish to pay at a different time of the month than the payment date shown on your bill. We offer a range of payment dates from 1st, 7th, 15th, 23rd or the last day of the month. All we ask is that you pay by Direct Debit.

If you have difficulty paying your bill, we may be able to help you by making a more suitable payment arrangement or give you advice on claiming the benefits or allowances you may be entitled to.

Please Remember

If you receive any notice from the City Council regarding the non-payment of your Council Tax, do not ignore it! Doing this may mean that further action will be taken with additional costs being incurred.
