Project Controls

Project controls make sure the project is being carried out in line with the plan and remains viable against the Business Case. Controls are the tools used by the Project Manager to assure the Project Sponsor and Board that the project is well managed. Reporting should keep the Project Sponsor and Board informed of progress against the current plan and seek management action only when it is needed most, that is “management by exception”.

This section introduces a number of controls to achieve the above:

  • Version Control – It is important that a project is properly administered and a system is in place for dealing with different versions of documents.
  • Change Control – A project is likely to change over its lifetime. It is important that these changes are controlled and within budget.
  • Exception Report – Sometimes during the project delivery events occur that we hadn’t foreseen. The Exception Report gives our plans for how we will respond to these.
  • Highlight Report – The highlight report gives the Project Board an overview of the current status of the project its the latest developments.

The next section introduces an approach to document Version Control.
