Premises Licences
A premises licence is a single authorisation that allows a premises to be used for one or more licensable activities.
‘Premises’ means any place and includes a vehicle, vessel or moveable structure.
Applicants must specify when making their application, which activities they wish to hold on their premises and the hours and days they will take place.
If the premises you are proposing to use is situated within the Sheffield boundary, you are required to make an application to Sheffield City Council.
You can either contact us for an application pack or download an application form and guidance notes from the downloadable document at the bottom of the page.
Please note: we are currently unable to accept electronic application forms. Please print a copy of the form and complete. We are also unable to take payment via the internet. Payment can be accepted in cash, cheque or postal orders.
Once you have submitted your correctly completed application to the Licensing General Section and the responsible authorities, the minimum time it will take you to be granted your licence is 28 days.
However, this time period may be extended if any objections to our application are received.
It is therefore advisable to apply well in advance of requiring your licence as you will be unable to carry out any licensable activities until your application has been determined and issued to you.
The licence is issued in 2 parts; the premises licence and the premises licence summary.
The licence must:
- specify the name and address of the holder
- include a plan of the premises to which the licence relates
- if the licence has effect for a limited period, specify that period
- specify the licensable activities for which the premises may be used
- if the licensable activities include the supply of alcohol, specify the name and address of the individual who is the premises supervisor in respect of the licence
- specify the conditions to which the licence has effect.
The summary is an abbreviated version of the full licence and must be displayed at the premises.
If any changes are made to the licence (see below), the original licence document must be returned to the Licensing General Section for amendment.
A premises licence remains in force until it is surrendered by the holder or revoked following a review of the licence.
If the licence specifies it is for a time limited period, the licence will have effect until that period expires.
Also, a premises licence lapses if the holder of the licence -
- Dies
- Becomes mentally incapable
- Becomes insolvent
- Is dissolved.
If any of the above situations happens, please contact us immediately.
You must notify the Licensing General Section if you make any changes that affect your licence, i.e.,
- If you wish to make a variation to the times, days, licensable activities or physical shape of the premises, you will be required to apply for a variation of your premises licence
- If you appoint a new Designated Premises Supervisor
- If the licence is transferred into another name
- If the holder of the premises licence changes his/her name or address
- If the designated premises supervisor changes his/her name or address
