What are Business Rates

Business rates, also known as National Non-Domestic Rates (NNDR), are the contributions made by businesses towards the costs of services provided by the Council. Business Rates collected by the Council are paid into a central pool maintained by the Government.

Each year, the Government takes the total amount of money in the Pool and pays it back to every local Council, Fire, and Police Authority in proportion to the number of Council Tax payers in the area.

The income we receive from the Non Domestic Rating Pool and other Government grants, along with local directly paid fees, rents, licences, and Council Tax, makes up the Council's budget.
