Discretionary Rate Relief

Non-profit making organisations have no automatic entitlement, however the Council may decide to give discretionary relief.

Your organisation must be charitable, religious or concerned with education, social welfare, science, literature or the fine arts. Or the property must be used by a non-profit-making organisation wholly or mainly for the purpose of recreation.

To apply for relief, we will need you to complete and return the application form below. You will also need to provide us with a copy of your Organsations Objects and Articles to show why it was established and a copy of your last 3 years’ Audited Accounts. This will allow us to confirm whether your organisation makes profits and what and what happens to them.

Decisions are made on a case-by-case basis, and judged on a set of policy guidelines and criteria by a Council  appointed committee. To obtain an application form or for more information on rate relief, please contact Business Rates Section on (0114) 273 4398 or download one here.

You will be notified of all decisions in writing. The Council can only consider backdating Discretionary relief to a certain date. If you think you may qualify, you should make an application promtly.

Please note that you must pay as billed while your application is being considered. If you are unable to pay, please contact us to discuss this further.

If you have received any notices from us regarding non-payment, please contact us immediately so that we can come to some form of payment arrangement.
